Fraunhofer ICT site – Storage Extension
Demonstration of HESS retrofitting for storage extension – Demo#3
An existing renewable power plant (grid connection size 2MW) at ICT with a switchable vanadium flow battery storage will be retro-fitted to allow more efficient weekly balances of a Monday-Friday operation. Currently, the inverter is designed with fast control to form a virtual synchronous machine suitable for providing momentary reserve. For SMHYLES the energy content of the battery will be extended to help efficiently balance the energy on a weekly basis to also support more EV-charging in the future.
For that a novel energy management system (EMS) will be designed by ULA and tested in the battery over a series of weekends to allow data collection and adjustments. The activities will be conducted over a 12 months period to provide data for evaluations on the seasonality of the operations. The results will be analysed and compared with a model of a similar battery system that utilizes larger tanks instead of the retro-fitted storage extension. A technoeconomic analysis will be performed, to analyse the results and provide a conclusive answer on the question whether a storage extension can be beneficial to a storage with larger tank.
