EDA – Electricidade dos Açores

Electricidade dos Açores was created in 1980, as a public company, with the objective to establish and explore the public service of production, transmission (TSO) and distribution (DSO) of electric energy in the Autonomous Region of the Azores. In the activity of production, EDA ensures the conduction and maintenance of the thermal production equipment in every island, in order to grant the fulfillment of all the loads, with quality and with the least possible cost of supplied energy, always seeking also to preserve the environment. The company also coordinates the project and construction of new thermal power plants and improvements to the existing facilities, as indicated by the company planning. In the activity of transmission and distribution, EDA, as the concessionary of transmission and distribution of electric energy in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, runs this activity through a permanent process of improvements of efficiency and productivity. Besides the activities described, one other important company of renewable energy production is part of the EDA Group, namely, EDA Renováveis. This company assumes a strategic role in EDA Group in the segment of renewable energy, developing studies and projects, in a perspective of valorization of both hydro, wind, PV and geothermal sources, producing electric energy from these renewable sources. Furthermore, EDA is also responsible for the management and the dispatch of all the electric systems in the Azorean Islands, which includes the acquisition of energy from independent renewable power producers to be injected into the island’s electric grids.
